This fun progam is for 12-16 year old musicians who are comfortable with their instrument – be it guitar, bass, drums or vocals. As each student matures in their musicianship, they get to audition for House of Bands GOLD.
The sessions are split between the class room, the rehearsal studios and the showcase room. Students learn the skills required to perform popular songs and originals in a real live band, applying everything they’ve learned and grasping what they have yet to learn… Students can join House of Bands even if they have never played with other people.
At MMA we specialise in Song writing, so the students will work extensively – as bands – on their own original material and style. The instructors work hard to support all students in their growth as musicians and artists.
With a maximum of 15 students per class (up to 4 bands) Each session is 90 minutes long with some instruction, band practice and stage and performance skills time built in.
After each 10-12 week track, students can continue into the next term, and may be invited to join House of Bands GOLD.

HOUSE OF BANDS *GOLD*
The unique thing about our programs is that students are working in an exciting and lively hub of musicians. When the students get to a certain level of musicianship, hey may be invited to join House of Bands *Gold* with Producer Darren Clarke. This runs much like regular House of Bands but on a monthly tuition system from September through June. Students may be invited to join at any time, and the end of course showcases act as auditions for this.
We look at the students
• Technical Skill
• Musicality & Creativity
• Performance skills & Stage presence
• Ability to work with other people.
If you think you or your son / daughter needs to go straight into HOB *Gold* then please talk to us about setting up an audition.
In House of Bands *Gold* we put musicians together into bands as soon as possible, and spend months working toward several showcases – at MMA and around in the community e.g. At Kreuzberg, Stynberg Gallery and SLO Brewing Co. The emphasis is on writing original material and from time to time a song is chosen for House of Bands *Platinum*. A 10-12 week session where the band gets to work with Producer Darren Clarke on a weekly basis to record the single.
HOUSE OF BANDS FAQ’s
How does it work with students at different levels?
The beauty of playing in a band is that you can have a rhythm guitar player with less experience paired with a shredding soloist who is near virtuoso, and everybody still has so much to learn. What we do is encourage bands to work on original material together, so there is a sense of ownership of the song and the opportunity for the participants to play to their strengths. It’s good for people to be around others who are better than them, and it’s good for those that are ‘better’ to realise their weak spots and bring those up to parr. In House of Bands we look at and work on so much more than just guitar techniques. We’re working on communication skills, performance skills, creativity and arrangements, and more. The pace that people grow is really exciting and the momentum that picks up fuels people’s progress and inspiration.
However sometimes students are much further ahead than their peers, and in that case we invite them into House of Bands *Gold*.
How does it work with students playing different styles?
At MMA we focus on contemporary music, so that’s Rock, Pop, Folk and Blues mostly. What is exciting about House of Bands is that we could have 4 or 5 completely different bands emerge throughout the program. Every musician is going to join the program with different tastes and influences and they will be able to bring those to the table. However we do teach set songs that we want the students to learn, but depending on their ability they can customize and interpret the songs to whatever degree they choose. We do try to group people as best we can in compatible groups, and encourage them to write original material that will reflect the variety of their tastes and strengths.
