A 12-week program for musicians age 16 – Mature who are comfortable with their instrument, be it guitar, bass, vocals or drums. You don’t have to be advanced to do this course and you don’t have to have played in a band before! But if you want to improve at playing, writing, collaborating and performing with other musicians, this is the program for you. The emphasis for is on Song writing and performing. You will learn song writing and arranging techniques and a professional will guide you through the process, teaching how to write and play the best parts for the songs and achieve the dynamics you want. The course culminates in a Showcase where you get to show off your progress and your songs. Students can then enroll again to continue growing as a musician and writing new material in a supportive and professional environment.
How will it work with students at different levels? We try to put people together in bands or duos that work. What we do is encourage bands to work on original material together, so there is a sense of ownership of the song and the opportunity for the participants to play to their strengths. It’s good for people to be around others who are better than them, and it’s good for those that are ‘better’ to realise their weak spots and bring those up to parr. We work on communication skills, performance skills, creativity, arrangements, and more. The momentum that picks up fuels progress and inspiration.
How does it work with students playing different styles? At MMA we focus on contemporary music, so that’s mostly Rock, Pop, Folk and Blues styles. We think it’s exciting that we have completely different bands and artists taking part and emerging throughout the program. This helps diffuse competitiveness and fosters community. Music is an art not a sport. Every musician is going to join the program with different tastes and influences and they will be able to bring those to the table. We do teach set songs that we want the students to learn, but depending on their ability they can customize and interpret the songs to whatever degree they choose. If a student would struggle at this level, we have a Learners Guitar Lab that may be a better option. If they are too advanced for this, then we have our ACM Diploma programs.
